Researchers in China found combining both acupuncture and the Parkinson's drug, levodopa-benserazide, in just four courses of treatment, yielded an 89.4% effective rate vs. 52.6% effective rate with the Parkinson's drug alone. This is a 70% improvement for this population!

In addition to ratings on the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) for Parkinson's, plasma and red blood cells were collected to measure superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and lipid peroxidation levels. Decreased SOD activity and increased lipid peroxidation contribute to the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in Parkinson's.

After four treatment courses, the acupuncture plus Parkinson's drug group had SOD activity that was significantly higher (i.e., improved), had lipid peroxidation levels that were significantly lower (i.e., improved), and their ratings on the UPDRS were higher compared to the group who only received the Parkinson's drug.
